Minister of Mines and Energy highlights geopolitical importance and supports accession.
The Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, announced that Brazil is set to join OPEC+, a group of oil-producing countries.
The statement was made during an interview with CNN this Wednesday (5th), in which Silveira highlighted the geopolitical importance of this decision for the country.
According to the minister, the topic will be discussed at the next meeting of the National Energy Policy Council (CNPE), scheduled for 18th February.
“I firmly believe that we will bring this to the CNPE, and through this highly productive dialogue and a very harmonious government, we will become part of this platform, especially as it is geopolitically very important for Brazil.”
Silveira emphasised Brazil’s return to international dialogue, highlighting the importance of participating in global platforms.
Joining OPEC+ would not entail commitments to targets or production cuts but would allow Brazil to actively participate in strategic discussions on oil exploration.
Additionally, Silveira highlighted potential synergies with Middle Eastern countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain.
The minister stressed that Brazil’s participation in OPEC+ could help accelerate the energy transition while also promoting the country’s sustainable economic development.
“We still have a lot to learn in the field of energy, and they are very advanced in this area,” said Silveira, referring to Middle Eastern countries.
The final decision on Brazil’s accession to OPEC+ is expected to be made at the CNPE meeting, which will be attended by 16 government ministers.
Silveira also mentioned that President Lula has been actively participating in these meetings, having attended four of the last five sessions.
