Petrobras refineries break records in pre-salt processing this year

Agência Gov – 10/09/2024 11:55

State-owned company’s refining park reaches 95% utilisation rate and surpasses last year’s mark, with 76% of the processed oil coming from the pre-salt layer.

In August, Petrobras set a new record for processing pre-salt oil at its refineries, reaching a level of 76% of the total load. This result surpassed the previous record of 73%, achieved in June 2023.

From January to August, pre-salt processing also showed exceptional performance, reaching a record 69%, exceeding the 66% from the same period last year.

“Pre-salt oils offer a high yield of medium distillates. From the same volume of pre-salt oil, when compared to post-salt oil, it is possible to produce more jet fuel (aviation kerosene) and diesel, which are higher value-added derivatives. This record reflects the optimisation of assets and the application of innovative technologies, always respecting safety and environmental values,” explains William França, Petrobras’ Director of Industrial Processes and Products.

Another positive aspect of pre-salt oil is its high paraffin content, a chemical characteristic that results in superior-quality diesel. In addition, pre-salt oils have low sulphur content, contributing to more sustainable refining activities and the production of low-sulphur derivatives, such as S-10 diesel and bunker fuel.

In August, the best result of the year was also recorded for the Refinery Utilisation Factor (RUF), reaching 95%, demonstrating the high operational performance of Petrobras’ refining park and its integration with the company’s logistics and commercialisation sectors. “We are contributing to the growth of our domestic market clients with competitive and secure operations, always maintaining profitability and financial sustainability,” said Claudio Schlosser, Petrobras’ Director of Logistics, Commercialisation, and Markets.
