Hydrocarbons have been found in the Aram block.
Petrobras has announced the presence of hydrocarbons in an exploratory well within the Aram block, located at great depth (below sea level) in the pre-salt layer of the Santos Basin (São Paulo). The presence of hydrocarbons suggests a probable presence of oil in the area.
The location where hydrocarbons were identified (well 4-BRSA-1395-SPS) is offshore, at a depth of approximately 1,760 metres. This depth is equivalent to the height of Pico do Machadão in the Serra da Mantiqueira (Minas Gerais) and is around 245 kilometres from the coast—about two and a half times the distance between Santos and São Paulo. The production capacity of the site is still unknown.
“The well is currently being drilled, and the hydrocarbon-bearing interval has been identified through electric logs, gas indications, and fluid sampling, which will later be analysed in laboratory tests. These findings will help assess the potential of the area and guide further exploratory activities,” explains Petrobras.
The Aram Block
Exploration of the Aram block is under a public concession granted by the National Agency for Petroleum, Natural Gas, and Biofuels (ANP), obtained in 2020 by a consortium comprising Pré-Sal Petróleo S.A. (PPSA), a state-owned company under the Ministry of Mines and Energy, and the multinational China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC). Petrobras is the operating company for the block.
According to the companies involved, the Aram block is a key asset for exploration in the pre-salt layer of the Santos Basin. In 2021, Petrobras discovered oil in the same block at a well named Curaçao, located about five kilometres from well 4-BRSA-1395-SPS.
